Aid for Cyclone Relief in Malawi

by Patrick & Marvis Readson

Cyclone Gombe recently made landfall in Malawi, especially in the southern part causing the most destruction in the districts of Machinga, Mulania, Phalombe, Chikwawa, Nsanje Blantyre, and Zomba.   Gombe came soon after Cyclone Ana, which hits Malawi in January killing over 50, displacing hundreds, and destroying much infrastructure and many homes. Additionally, with the cyclone came heavy rainfall over many days and flooding that forced people from their homes. Many were left to sleep without shelters or blankets. Those most effected were women, children, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

The primary need for many was food, because those living in the most affected areas were busy trying to rescue others and do what they could to help rebuild. Upon being informed of the situation, Disciplers International (DI) provided help right away by sending financial aid to purchase food to help relief workers and families affected by the cyclone.

Because Phalombe was one of the districts hit the hardest by the cyclone, and is in close proximity to our Church ministry, we (Patrick and Mervis) selected the Chidalara Camp community in Phalombe to distribute the food. Photos on the left show food being distributed by us to members of that community.

We had a large crowd for the food distribution ceremony, which included Government officials and Chiefs. Through generous support provided by donors contributing aid through Disciplers International, we were able to help and bless over 100 families! Those in Phalombe are very thankful for this support and grateful to all who contributed for the purpose of serving people desperately in need.
